Pergola Brackets for 4x4 Wood Posts
If you are building a pergola from timber rather than buying a kit, brackets are what turn a pile of 4x4s into a rigid structure without fussy joinery. They are cheap, but choosing the wrong type or size is the most common DIY mistake. Here is what actually matters.
The 4x4 "actual size" trap
A "4x4" post is not 4 inches. Dimensional lumber measures about 3.5" x 3.5" once planed, and almost every bracket is built to that actual 3.5-inch size. If you buy a bracket sized for a true 4 inches it will be loose; if your posts are rough-sawn full-4-inch timber, standard brackets will not fit. Match the bracket to your post's ACTUAL width, not its nominal name.
3-way vs 4-way
A 3-way bracket joins a post to two beams meeting at a corner - use these at the four corners of a freestanding pergola. A 4-way bracket adds a third beam direction, for a mid-run post where beams continue past it. Most backyard pergolas need 3-way corners plus a couple of 4-way brackets only if the run is long. Buy corners first; add 4-ways only where a post is mid-span.
Slanted-roof kits and post bases
If you want a pitched roof for runoff, a slanted-roof bracket sets the angle for you instead of you cutting compound miters. Separately, a post base anchors the pergola to concrete or a deck - do not skip it, because an unanchored pergola is the one that ends up across the yard after a storm. Match anchoring to your wind exposure.
