Don’t Know Much about Theology

For my first blogsite entry, I would like to present a bit of doggerel, written on a lazy, sunny, October afternoon in Missouri when I really should have been doing something more productive. Charlie Henrickson is much better at this than I am, here, dear reader, is my own humble contribution. He that ears to hear…

Don’t Know Much about Theology (after Sam Cooke’s Don’t Know Much About History)

Parody by Fred Baue

Don’t know much about theology,
Don’t know much about the liturgy.
Don’t know much about Bible books,
Don’t know much about the Greek I took.

But I do know that I love me,
And if they let me be wild and free,
What a wonderful church this will be.

Don’t know much about ministry,
Don’t know much church history.
Don’t know much about Concordia.
Don’t know Kyrie from Gloria.

But I know the backbeat’s two and four,
And if we throw tradition out the door,
What a wonderful church this will be.

I don’t claim to be an A student,
Knowledge ain’t my thing.
If I just go with my feelings,
I’ll be like Joel Osteen!

Don’t know much about theology,
Don’t know much about the liturgy.
Don’t know much about Bible books,
Don’t know much about the Greek I took.

But I do know that I love me,
And if they let me be wild and free,
What a wonderful church this will be.

Rev. Frederic W. Baue, Ph.D., also known as “Fritz,” is something of a Renaissance man, or so people say. He is an accomplished musician, songwriter, hymn writer (see LSB 629), recording artist, writer, novelist, poet, teacher, public speaker, theologian, and comic. But most of all, he is, in the old phrase, “a pastor of Missouri Synod.” A proud graduate of “801” (CSL ’81), Baue served congregations in Minnesota, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Illinois before retiring in 2011. His doctorate in English literature led to his work as Senior Editor at CPH (1999-2004), where he managed Portals of Prayer and Concordia Pulpit Resources while producing books such as The Lonely Way, Selected Sermons of Norman Nagel, The Fire and the Staff and many others. He and his wife Jean live in St. Louis. They have three grown children. And two cats.
